East Lyme - Donna M. Harman, 68, of Niantic and Port Orange, Fla., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., after a courageous battle with cancer. Her husband of 28 years, William, was by her side throughout every stage of her illness and when she gently slipped into the arms of God.

Donna was born on Sept. 15, 1943, in New London, the daughter of late Herbert B. and Katherine C. King. She graduated in 1961 from New London High School. On May 23, 1983, she married William Harman on Valencia Island, County Kerry Ireland in the presence of the cousins she had never met.

Donna retired in 2002 from The New London Day Publishing Company after 30 years of loyal service. She was a former member of The New London Country Club in Waterford and together with her husband, served as club historian. She was a member of River Bend Golf Club, Indigo Lakes Golf Club, and The Moose Club, all of Ormond Beach, Fla.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughters, Laurie Whitney of Norwich, Denise and her husband, Robert Brodeur, of East Lyme; and her son, Frederick McCormack of Niantic; her two step-daughters, Lisa and her husband, Webster Scott, of East Lyme, and Laurie Harman of North Stonington. She leaves behind 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and was looking forward to the births of four additional great-grandchildren this year. Donna is also survived by her brother, James and his wife, Pamela King, of Waterford; her sister-in-law, Katherine (Harman) Philopena and her husband, Fred, of Pound Ridge, N.Y., Rose Harman of Waterford, and Polly Harman of Melbourne, Fla. Each and every member will cherish the memory that will forever live within their hearts of a woman who always put family as her first priority.

In addition to her parents, Donna was predeceased by her first husband, Frederick McCormack; her sisters, Joan Banta and Patricia Crowley; and her son-in-law, Mark Whitney.

The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to Dr. Dennis Slater and the medical team at Eastern Connecticut Hematology & Oncology Associates, Dr. Setu Vora of Norwich, and to the team at Florida Hospital Memorial Cancer Center, especially Charlene Cleary Brady for the loyal friendship and heartfelt caring during her treatment.
