Lyme - Donna M. Harman, 68, of Niantic and Port Orange, Fla., passed
away peacefully on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Florida Hospital
Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., after a courageous
battle with cancer. Her husband of 28 years, William, was by her
side throughout every stage of her illness and when she gently
slipped into the arms of God.
Donna was born on Sept. 15, 1943, in New London, the daughter of
late Herbert B. and Katherine C. King. She graduated in 1961 from
New London High School. On May 23, 1983, she married William Harman
on Valencia Island, County Kerry Ireland in the presence of the
cousins she had never met.
Donna retired in 2002 from The New London Day Publishing Company
after 30 years of loyal service. She was a former member of The New
London Country Club in Waterford and together with her husband,
served as club historian. She was a member of River Bend Golf Club,
Indigo Lakes Golf Club, and The Moose Club, all of Ormond Beach,
Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughters, Laurie
Whitney of Norwich, Denise and her husband, Robert Brodeur, of East
Lyme; and her son, Frederick McCormack of Niantic; her two
step-daughters, Lisa and her husband, Webster Scott, of East Lyme,
and Laurie Harman of North Stonington. She leaves behind 17
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and was looking forward to
the births of four additional great-grandchildren this year. Donna
is also survived by her brother, James and his wife, Pamela King, of
Waterford; her sister-in-law, Katherine (Harman) Philopena and her
husband, Fred, of Pound Ridge, N.Y., Rose Harman of Waterford, and
Polly Harman of Melbourne, Fla. Each and every member will cherish
the memory that will forever live within their hearts of a woman who
always put family as her first priority.
In addition to her parents, Donna was predeceased by her first
husband, Frederick McCormack; her sisters, Joan Banta and Patricia
Crowley; and her son-in-law, Mark Whitney.
The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to Dr.
Dennis Slater and the medical team at Eastern Connecticut Hematology
& Oncology Associates, Dr. Setu Vora of Norwich, and to the team at
Florida Hospital Memorial Cancer Center, especially Charlene Cleary
Brady for the loyal friendship and heartfelt caring during her
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday,
April 24, 2012. Entombment will follow in St. Mary Mausoleum in New
London. Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, at the Thomas L.
Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic.
